❖ Referral to Government Services
❖ Referral for Preschool Children
Children under six who are diagnosed as having developmental delay, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, emotional regulation difficulties, or other developmental disorders will be referred to the Central Referral System provided by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) for rehabilitation services and the Child Assessment Center (CAC) for further follow-up. The psychologist will provide the documents required for service applications for those who are qualified. Parents are to bring the documents to the school social worker or social worker at the SWD's Integrated Family Service Centre for application processing. The following are different types of rehabilitation services provided by the SWD:
♦︎ Special Child Care Centre (SCCC)
♦︎ Early Education and Training Centre ( EETC)
♦︎ On-site Pre-school Rehabilitation Services (OPRS)
♦︎ Integrated Programme in Kindergarten-cum-Child Care Center (IP)
Waiting Time
There is a certain waiting period for government services, including assessment at the Child Assessment Centre (CAC) and rehabilitation services provided by the Social Welfare Department (SWD). Parents should consider whether their child's condition can afford a long wait, to avoid missing the critical period for diagnosis and treatment. If assessed and referred by our center, the waiting time for SWD rehabilitation services can bypass the one to two-year waiting period for CAC assessment, directly entering the queue for SWD services. The waiting time for SWD services can also be up to one to two years. However, conducting an early assessment to understand the child's needs can allow for appropriate support to be provided while waiting for SWD service.
❖ Referral for Children in Primary School and Secondary School
Students in primary or secondary school who have significant features of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or other psychiatric disorders, e.g. anxiety and depression, will be referred to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre of Hospital Authority if medication therapy is desired.
School-Based Support
Children diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may receive relevant support depending on the resources and arrangements of individual schools. If the school is known to provide such support, the assessment report can be submitted to the school to obtain related services. Children diagnosed with ADHD, ASD, or dyslexia who wish to receive internal examination accommodations can submit their assessment reports to their school (children with ADHD or ASD will first be referred to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre of the Hospital Authority).
