❖ Brain-Focused Treatment
❖ Neurofeedback Therapy (Non-Medication)
Principle of Neurofeedback Therapy
Our brain has billions of neurons that communicate with each other through neural synapses. These activities produce measurable brainwaves. Research has found that brainwave activities can be regulated through training, leading to improved brain functions. Neurofeedback therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that monitors brainwave activities. By providing repeated, consistent, and immediate rewards (feedback) every time the desired brainwave frequency is emitted, the brain learns to maintain that frequency even without feedback, improving various brain functions.
Suitable For
❖ Children aged above 6
❖Children diagnosed or suspected of having symptoms of developmental disorders such as ADHD, ASD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.
❖ Medication
Types of Medication
There are several medications used in the field of neuroscience to treat children with different conditions. Commonly prescribed medications often fall into the main categories of stimulants and inhibitors, which target different neurotransmitters or receptors in the brain.
❖ Stimulants
Stimulant medications increase the activity of specific chemicals in the brain, leading to improved attention, focus, and impulse control. Common examples of stimulant medications include Ritalin and Concerta. It is prescribed for children with ADHD.
❖ Inhibitors
Inhibitor medications slow down or reduce the activity of certain enzymes or receptors in the body. They can be used to treat conditions where there is too much activity or imbalance. Common inhibitor medication types include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), etc. It is prescribed for those with anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or depression.
Reminder
If medication therapy is desired, a referral will be made to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre of the Hospital Authority for follow-up. Medications and specific treatment plans must only be prescribed and monitored by a qualified healthcare professional based on the child's individual diagnosis, symptoms, and medical history. Regular monitoring and close communication with the healthcare provider are essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the medication.
